Newsletters & Notices

Term 2 Week 10
I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend. Not long to go until the holidays, amazing how fast this eleven-week term has gone!

A little reminder about school uniform: Correct school shoes and jerseys must be worn. Please send a note with your child or email me if they are wearing something different temporarily.

If buying new clothes or shoes in the holidays:
Shoes are black in a style that suits your child as long as they are suitable for running, jumping and other athletic activities. Avoid shoes with pink, bright green or other colours incorporated into the design.  Students may choose to wear white or black socks or tights.

Stationery
Please ask your child if they need any stationery at school.  A number of children do not have pens, pencil sharpeners, erasers and/or rulers. Most children still have spare pencils and spare glue sticks in my cupboard for when these need replacing.

class-time to a practical hands-on activity.

Zebra Crossing
Last week, the pedestrian crossing was moved to a new position further up Willoughby Ave. In
order to improve student safety; students will no longer be able to cross the car park at the front
of the school. All students have been shown the entry and exits points to the school and have
discussed the need to walk to the crossing and not cross over the road without using the
crossing. Parent support as role models is essential.

If you are having trouble parking outside the school in Willoughby Ave, there are also entrances to the school in Juliet Ave (turn right out of the link and left into Juliet Ave) and Freyberg Place (continue along Angelo Ave - Freyberg is on the right).

Auckland’s weather is so temperamental! Thunder, lightning and then torrential rain only to clear up to produce bright blue skies just in time for the Family Picnic. It was great to see so many families there. The water slide, swimming pool and Zombie Zone were very popular again this year.

Week Five has come around so quickly. Hard to believe we are half way through this term already. All the Middle School classes will be about to start our new concept unit: Systems. We will be looking at electrical systems and how the parts of these work together.

Student arrival time
Students should be arriving at school around 8:30 am. This allows them to organise their things before the bell goes and are ready to start learning.
On the other side, some students are arriving at school well before 8:30am. KidzPatch is available to supervise those students who need to be at school early in the morning.

Mathletics:
Students should have received their Mathletics login passwords.

Room 6’s Teachers
Most of the time I will be teaching in Room 6. I have a regular Leadership release day (Thursday). Mary Smol is the regular teacher on this day. There will be other times when I am required to attend meetings or be released for other leadership tasks. Mary will be used to release me as much as possible to keep disruption to a minimum. Mary and I talk frequently to ensure the class runs smoothly, whichever one of us is teaching. We both have different strengths so this is a bonus for the children. Please talk to either of us about any concerns you may have.

Travelwise
Auckland Transport conduct regular surveys, to understand how important messages are being communicated within the Auckland community.  They are currently seeking feedback from our school community on the 'Back to School' campaign which has been run throughout the Auckland region.  Please click on the link: http://tinyurl.com/AT-BackToSchool2015 to be taken directly to a brief online survey.  Everyone who completes the survey goes into the draw to win a $50 Prezzy Card.  All information and responses are used for internal research purposes only.  Thank you for taking the time to assist with the survey and for supporting our Travelwise programme.

Communication:
We hope to use less paper for photocopying at school so a lot of notices and Room 6 Weekly Newsletters will come via email - much nicer than squashed notices covered in left over lunch!

If you haven’t ‘liked’ the HPS Facebook Page yet, this is also a well-used way of reminding you about events that are coming up. The HPS website also has useful information and school newsletters.

We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year. The children have settled back into school well and will have a busy term ahead.

Judy Coker will be teaching in Room 6 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Mary Smol will be in Room 6 on Thursdays.

The following information will help you assist your child to become independent and organised for school. This will be also discussed at the Meet the Teacher Evening on February 16th.

During the hot weather it is helpful for the children to have a bottle of water on their desks to avoid dehydration. Other drinks can be kept in their bags for break times.

A school uniform sunhat must be worn when outdoors during terms 1 and 4. Putting on sunscreen in the mornings is a useful precaution.

Our swimming days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday weather permitting, although we will swim in the rain if it is warm. All children are expected to participate in the school swimming programme. However, if your child is sick or injured please send a note or email to excuse them from that day’s swimming. Please ensure all items of your child’s uniform are clearly named to avoid mix-ups. All children will wear a cap in the pool. Caps are available at the school office for $5.00.

Swimming lessons at Lloyd Elsmore start on Monday next week. The children travel to the pool, with the teacher, by bus. They are split into 3 groups and each group has a 25 minute lesson with an instructor. There will be 7 lessons.

Our library day this term is Friday. The Year 3 children are allowed three books at a time and can have them for a fortnight. The year 4s can have 4 books.

Homework is expected. It is recommended that all children read for at least 15 mins per night and spend a similar amount of time practising basic facts, number knowledge and/or times tables. Maths homework will be set through Mathletics.

We value all kinds of reading, whether it is a book read at school that day, a library book or other reading material chosen by the child. Independent readers can choose their own reading material and may not bring home readers that have been read with the teacher. Reading material will be available for them to take home should this be required.
Reading should be recorded in their reading notebook. The children can do this themselves. The notebook should then be returned to school on a Friday for the teacher to see what has been read.

Please make sure your child has their Junior book bag or a sturdy plastic bag to keep books (and notices) clean and dry in their schoolbags.

We also feel that being read to by a parent, member of the extended family or an older sibling is important. Discussing the story is a good way of increasing comprehension.

Each term the children’s knowledge and quick recall of basic facts and times tables will be assessed.

Part way through the morning we have a fresh or dried fruit or vege snack time. We find some children need a top up before the morning tea break and this is a way to encourage healthy eating. This is optional.

We would appreciate it if you could send a large box of tissues to school ready for when the inevitable sniffles that come with the change of weather. We will look after these and put them out for the children to use as needed.

Our initial concept focus is Learning Focused Relationships (getting to know our students well) and then we will be working on Systems, focusing on electrical circuits.

During the year, as part of the programme, we may take short walks/runs around the local streets. The utmost care will be taken to ensure everyone’s safety. Some children may be involved with group trips during class time e.g. sport, choir or chess. Please fill in the attached slip indicating whether or not you give permission for these walks/runs or group trips. Whole class trips will still need your permission even though the cost will be covered by the activity fee.

I will be using email as an extra way to communicate with you this year. Could you please include the email address/addresses that I can use to communicate with you, on the attached slip.

Should you wish to contact us by email our addresses are:
j.coker@howickprimary.school.nz

We will regularly share classroom learning and notices with you through our classroom blog. www.2015hpsrm6.blogspot.co.nz

We will also be using Facebook as a way of communicating team and whole school learning and reminders.

Room 6 class teachers

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

My name is Judy Coker and I am the Associate Principal at HPS.

I am married with two grown up children.

I trained in Auckland many years ago and refreshed my qualifications more recently when I studied for  a year fulltime to complete my Bachelor of Education and 2 years part time to complete the Honours  Degree. I taught at Paerata, Manurewa South and Roscommon before taking time out to have children  and to be a Playcentre Mum. I have been teaching full time at HPS since 1995.

My name is Mary Smol. I will be the teacher in Room 6 while Judy is released to fulfil her leadership  role.

I trained in Southampton and Lancaster in England.  I have a degree in Environmental Science and a  Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. I have been teaching for 21 years, in a range of schools in  England and here in New Zealand.
I am also trained as a music specialist and will also be taking a selection of music groups at HPS next  year.

www.2015hpsrm6.blogspot.co.nz will be our class blog address for 2015. Please check this over the  holidays or ideally click the follow button so you will receive instant updates throughout the school  year.

School opens on Monday, February 2nd with classes starting 8:50am. Students benefit from arriving  from 8:30am onwards to give them time to prepare for learning and play with friends.

Please could you make sure your child brings all their named stationery to school on the first day of  term.  Your child will also need to have a pencil case to store their pencils, glue, eraser, pens etc in to  help keep them together. This needs to be able to fit inside their desk so please make sure it’s not too  big.

 2015 Dates for Term 1:

We look forward to an exciting learning partnership with you in the New Year.

 Kind Regards,

 Judy Coker and Mary Smol
